THE KILTER BOARD

The Kilter Board is one of the newest and most exciting additions to our centre, bringing a fresh perspective to indoor climbing. As one of the most world-renowned training boards available, with the 16’ version as Kilter’s newly released offering – we’re excited to offer you this tool at the forefront of climbing training!

For those unfamiliar with the Kilter Board, this versatile and adjustable tool is a brilliant asset to any climber – catering to beginners and seasoned pros alike! Featuring LED holds that provide nearly infinite route possibilities (controlled via an app) and hydraulics to adjust the board’s pitch, it’s perfect not only for challenging your strength and technique, but providing an accessible entry point when just starting out at our gym.

From fully upright through to 70° degrees our 16’ Kilter Board offers all the training range you could wish for – from a relaxed warm-up spin, to power-move shakedowns! It’s here to help you take your climbing to the next level, whatever your level is currently.

How does it work? Let us explain!

Download the App

Begin by downloading the Kilter Board app, creating an account, and pairing it with our board. Once connected, you’ll gain access to a treasure trove of bouldering problems. Thousands of routes spanning all difficulty levels, tailored to your training needs.

Climbing Board Features

LED Hold System

The board’s LED lights illuminate your selected problem, using different colours to indicate which holds to use and for which body part.

Adjustable Pitch

With its hydraulic system, the Kilter Board can adjust the angle of incline from 15° to 70°, allowing you to customise the difficulty of your session. Whether you’re after a casual climb or an intense workout, this board has you covered.

Hold Texture

The Kilter holds’ texture feels somewhere between the smooth wood of our Hardwood Holds board, and the coarser grain of holds you might find around the gym. This has some great benefits – an accessible level of friction, while enabling training and climbing for long periods without too much wear on those hard-working hands and fingers!

What's the secret sauce?

The true magic of the Kilter Board lies in its standardisation. Every board worldwide is identical, meaning climbers across the globe can set and share problems. You can continue working on your favourites even if you’re in a new location. Plus, all 12’ problems are compatible with the 16’ expanded version, so no climb is left behind. To top it off, the app lets you track your progress, rate problems, leave notes, and even influence the grade consensus. On the Kilter Board, you’re not just a climber, you’re also your own route setter and grader.    â€‹

What makes the Kilter Board such an effective training tool? Let's break it down!

It’s not just about climbing. It’s about skill-building. Whether you’re working on explosive power, core strength, or finger-crushing grip, the Kilter Board has you covered.

Power

The board features routes that demand explosive moves, making it a surefire way to build strength and the kind of power that turns tough moves into second nature.

Core Strength

Tension, tension, and more tension. The Kilter Board’s adjustable pitch is the star of the show here. As you increase the pitch, your core strength will be put to the test and it will improve quickly. Tension is about to become your best friend.

Texture

The holds on a Kilter board feel like a mix of resin and wood, reducing the impact of skin limitations during your session. With a mix of incuts, crimps, slopers, and open hand holds, the Kilter board provides the perfect introduction to board training.

Finger Strength

From big, juggy holds to crimps that test your limits, the board’s variety will transform your grip strength. Dynamic moves to small holds demand precision and power. Regular practice across the range on offer will give your fingers the strength to handle anything thrown at you.

Dynamic Power

Practicing dynamic moves? The Kilter Board is your playground. Whether it’s dynos, coordination moves, or tricky sequences, the board allows you to experiment in a safe, controlled environment.

A quick word of caution!

Managing Training

Like all good things in life, moderation is key. It’s exciting to push yourself and train hard, but it’s crucial to listen to your body. Overtraining on the Kilter Board can lead to strain or injury, particularly in your fingers and joints. Balancing intense sessions with rest and recovery is the best way to maintain consistent progress and, most importantly, keep things fun. Injuries suck, and we don’t want that to happen to you! So here is a few things to keep in mind;

Load

When using any board on consecutive days, it's recommended to keep sessions short and high-quality. Leaving when feeling fresh allows for consecutive days of climbing. The difficulty of the sessions is another factor to consider. A great way to manage this is trying harder projects on day 1, easier projects on day 2, and focus on volume with mid-level problems day 3.

Vary Training Sessions

Consider how you manage the board session you do. Rotate the types of problems each day, for example: edges and in-cuts one day, slopey holds the next, and powerful arm-based problems on the third.

As mentioned before, varying the style of climbing is a good way to maximise the experience of the kilter board and make you more rounded as a climber.

To sum it all up This isn’t just your average wall or board. The Kilter Board is a collaborative tool designed to push your limits, build resilience, and keep you having a blast along the way.

So, what are you waiting for? Download the app, light up the holds, and get climbing.
